A Reflection on the Psalm for Sunday, May 25th, 2025:
Sixth Sunday of Easter

Psalm 67

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
or
R. Alleluia!

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations.

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
or
R. Alleluia!

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
or
R. Alleluia!

The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us. May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him.

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
or
R. Alleluia!

Pause. Pray. Reflect.

“...for you judge the peoples with equity.”

Praise is a gratitude response, and I have begun to recognize that gratitude does not come naturally to me. A glass filled midway usually strikes me as half empty first. Upon reflection, I’ve begun to realize the root of this ingratitude stems from the fear that I will not have enough. This is a scarcity mindset – the idea that someone else having access to something means there is less of it for you.

Knowing we are not enough (the sinners we are) is kind of an ironic position from which to battle this train of thought. But in God, there is enough. No one lacks. No one goes hungry. No one, not one person, especially in times of great trial, goes without abundance of grace, measured exactly and lovingly according to their need.

An image comes to mind. I am climbing a ladder, working very hard to reach the top, where I imagine God is. I am unfit, tired, but dedicated to the cause, laser focused on my sacrifices and definitely not on gratitude for the journey. My feet and hands work slowly. I see someone a hundred rungs above me, and my heart sinks. How did they make it that far? And look how well they are doing! Someone else, more spry, swiftly passes by; I despair that I am not moving fast enough. Yet someone else is below me, struggling more than they should. I’ve got enough to worry about though, without slowing down to help them climb.

What if God treated us equally in this moment? If so, anxiety is justified. To entertain this point, let’s say God gives everyone climbing the ladder three cubits of grace to make it to the top. Maybe three cubits of grace is plenty for the fellow a hundred rungs ahead of me. Maybe Spry Guy just makes the cut. But I’m not sure I’m going to make it. Maybe I need to steal an extra three cubits of grace from my brothers and sisters who are on the same journey. But I’m definitely not sharing my three cubits with the person behind me – who, even with the additional cubits, probably never stood a chance anyway.

But God doesn’t do this. Psalm 67 says God judges us with equity, not equality. While equality means giving everyone the same thing – three cubits of grace per person, no more, no less – equity means giving every person the specific treatment or provisions they need so everyone can reach the same outcome – in our case, eternity and relationship with God.

God’s choice to be equitable is such a beautiful act of mercy. He weaves custom grace throughout our lives in bespoke design. This individualized provision is a magnificent expression of His creativity, affection, and power when we see it activated in our brothers and sisters. Further, because I am secure in God’s provision for me, I rejoice in another’s abundance, and I give abundantly to the one in need. I have enough, He is enough, and none of us will fail to make it to the top of the ladder while in His care.

In this reality, I find peace, generosity, and the ability to give away rather than grasp. Gratitude is the fruitful byproduct of this change of heart. This heart is unlocked and freed to praise. So, let my heart praise You, O God. Let all Your peoples praise You. For You treat us all with equity, and in You, we have enough.

Michelynne Gomez! (And if I knew your middle name, I would have added it in there to draw out the exclamation) God’s grace was definitely present in abundance while you were writing this! And His grace, through you, has overflowed to me. I can so closely relate to your natural outlook on life, and this ladder image speaks a clear message of my inner dialogue. Thank you for writing this and honestly sharing your heart. Today, I hold closely this line, “I have enough, He is enough, and none of us will fail to make it to the top of the ladder while in His care.”

Thank you for bringing to light the difference between equity and equality. God’s grace is abundant, reckless, and so very personal. Love this reflection, Michelynne!
