A Reflection on the Gospel for Sunday, June 8th, 2025:
Solemnity of Pentecost

John
20.19-23

It was evening on the day Jesus rose from the dead, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

John
14.15-16, 23b-26

Jesus said to the disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.

“Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me.

“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.”
Pause. Pray. Reflect.
“Peace be with you.”

These words from Jesus in John 20:19, are a powerful reminder of His calming presence, especially in times of uncertainty. I remember working as a recruitment officer, responsible for sensitive immigration cases. One evening, after submitting an application, I was overwhelmed by the thought that I might have missed a critical detail. That night, I prayed for clarity. The next morning, I discovered the omission and immediately corrected it and contacted immigration officials. By God’s grace, the application was approved that same day. This experience reinforced my faith in the peace and guidance that come from trusting in Christ, a calm amid the storms of life.

Jesus’ words “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (John 20:21) remind me of my mission to embody His teachings, not only through the grand gestures but also in the small, everyday moments. Whether in the diligence I bring to my work or the kindness I extend to others, these seemingly minor acts hold great significance in God’s eyes. Through faith, my purpose becomes clear: I am called to reflect His love in all I do.

In John 14:16, Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, will be with us forever. There have been countless times when I have turned to the Holy Spirit in moments of doubt, and time and again I have felt His reassurance. Whether facing a difficult decision in changing jobs or needing clarity in relocation, the Holy Spirit has been my source of wisdom, offering comfort and direction when I need it most. This divine presence is a testament to God’s unfailing support in my life.

Cultivating a relationship with the Holy Spirit requires effort and intentionality. Jesus teaches in John 14:15:  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Staying connected to Christ means engaging with scripture, nurturing a prayer life, and embracing the sacraments. These practices allow me to remain steadfast in faith, ensuring that my thoughts and actions align with God’s will.

Most importantly, Jesus reassures me that I don’t need to have all the answers. “The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you” (John 14:26). This promise  affirms that I am never left to navigate life on my own; God provides the wisdom and direction I need through His Spirit. Whether it’s a gentle nudge in my heart or a verse that speaks to my situation, the Holy Spirit continuously works to guide me.

Lord Jesus, thank you for Your peace, which calms my heart. Thank you for the Holy Spirit, my constant Advocate and guide. Please help me to remain faithful to Your teachings and open to the Spirit’s leading. May my life reflect your love, and may I always find comfort in Your presence. Amen.
