Put On The Sky

A Reflection on the Psalm for Sunday, November 24th, 2024:
Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Psalm 93

R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.

R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

He has established the world; it shall never be moved; your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore.

R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

Pause. Pray. Reflect.

“...He is robed in majesty.”

When I was young, I used to love the children’s book The Queen Who Stole the Sky. In it, a selfish and envious Queen decides the most beautiful thing to wear to an upcoming ball is a dress made out of the sky. Her tailors reach up and “cut” the ever changing “cloth” from above, and weave it into a shimmering garment unmatched in beauty. Although the Queen in the story wore the dress to the detriment of her people, I vividly remember as a child looking at the sunrise or sunset, imagining how wonderful it would be to wear such exquisite light and color.

This memory fills me with joy whenever it comes to mind, and I think it is because metaphorically, we all desire to “put on the sky” in a way that reflects the glory of God in our life. I also think it speaks to our yearning to be sons and daughters of the King.

While I dream of wearing midnight with a thousand glittering stars, it is the Lord who is robed in majesty, and it is He who shows me what wearing such strength and power looks like. During His time, it did not look like robes of velvet and encrusted gems. It did not look like adulation from the people. It looked like a man who told his followers to not take a second tunic with them when they journeyed to preach the kingdom of God. It looked like the hem of simple cloth that a woman reached out to touch, begging for healing. It looked like the garment that was stripped from Him while he hung on the cross, and the shroud He was tenderly wrapped in while He laid in the tomb.

This is our King, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. His garb of poverty and sorrow transform into regalia of glory because He defeats death by love. In this raiment of beauty, He reigns forever and ever.

Life’s beauty fades quickly. I admit I look in the mirror and see how I wear the humbling effects of age and experience, neglecting to notice how some have shaped me for the better. These have asked of me some sacrifice, some bearing, some forgiveness, some virtue. They may not look glorious now, not in the sense of what beautiful is to the world. But I remind myself they are the best of me, and by grace I continue to pursue their adornment.

I have read somewhere that when the saints exercised the virtues, it is like they collected an array of jewels for heaven. In their own way, each chose to “put on the sky.” I can only imagine how beautiful they are, living forever with their beloved King of Glory.

So beautiful Miche. I love this image of putting on the sky. May we all continue to help each other grow in virtue and bring as many people as we can with us - so we will all be more sparkly and bejeweled in Heaven. Amen! 😊🙏🏻💕xo
