All For Him

A Reflection on the Second Reading for July 14th, 2019:
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Colossians 1.15-20

Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers — all things have been created through him and for him.

Christ is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the Church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.

For in Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his Cross.

Whenever I pray before leading music at mass, I ask God to help me remember that it is because of Him and for Him that I am here. Being a worship leader is one of the things that God has created me for but it’s challenging to remember that the glory belongs to Him and not to me. He created me to make music for Him. He created my fingers to play for Him and my voice to sing for Him. He created my guitar, the music, the church; “All things have been created through Him and for Him.”
"Because all things have been created through Jesus they are all good, or have the potential to be good."

Thinking about our world this way gives me great hope and reassurance. Because all things have been created through Jesus they are all good, or have the potential to be good. Even the things that we manipulate for our own pleasure are inherently good. I was talking to one of my children one day about a particular music artist that he felt was making inappropriate music. I said that this artist’s gift came from God and that he was choosing to use it for his own glory and not God’s. This surprised my son to think that this artist’s musical talent came from God when he was so obviously using it to promote evil.

As I said, this gives me great hope because it means that even this artist can turn back to God because he has been made through Him and for Him.

So let’s keep our eyes and hearts open to recognize those things that have turned away from The One who created them. Join me in prayer today for that something or someone to turn back to Him.

Let us Pray:
Lord, help us to remember that we too have been created through You and for You and let us use every gift for Your glory and not ours.
