A Reflection on the Psalm for November 25th, 2018:
Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

PSALM 93:1, 1-2, 5

R. The LORD is king; he is robed in majesty.

The LORD is king, in splendor robed;
robed is the LORD and girt about with strength.

R. The LORD is king; he is robed in majesty.

And he has made the world firm,
not to be moved.
Your throne stands firm from of old;
from everlasting you are, O LORD.

R. The LORD is king; he is robed in majesty.

Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed;
holiness befits your house,
O LORD, for length of days.

R. The LORD is king; he is robed in majesty.

Jesus as a “King” emphasizes the reality that He is the sovereign Lord of all creation. All rulers in this world are secondary to Him, and our allegiance is always to Him first, before it is given to any other leader. “Robed in majesty” connotes that He is majestic Himself. The image of king and majesty also depicts strength and power. He “wears” His strength in Him.

The second and third verses from the psalm above portray the kind of kingdom that He rules over. It is strong, and can never be moved. His decrees are certain and clear and made with confidence. This kingdom is holy, forever.

What does this tell us?  That we have a King, forever strong and sure, someone we can always depend on. We respect Him as our King, and yet He is as close to us as a brother or a father or a confidant. Most importantly, He loves us.

What does this mean to me, in this modern world that I live in? Someone once said we were made for a world and a time such as this. I often think about that. Why was I was made for this world at this time?

There is something special that is happening in the world around us. Apart from the seeming death of our institutions, the busyness, political bickering, and the preoccupation with material things, there is a bright spark of hope. There is a candle that has remained lit, and our responsibility is to keep that candle burning and to light other candles so that soon our world will become bright.

I am talking about the Divine renovation that is taking place in our midst (That book title is so inspired!). There is a renovation that needs to take place in our lives, in the lives of those around us and in the lives of those we come in contact with, here and around the world. We need to go back to the basics of loving God and neighbour, of bringing His love to those who need it. We are the church — His church, after all. There is a need for us to open our hearts to change — in ourselves, in the way we do things, and in the way we respond to people.

This is all easier said than done! We are so used to the way we do things — we even sit in the same pews at the same time every Sunday. We are creatures of habit and we do not look too kindly on the changes that we feel are being imposed on us. We feel that we know better than the initiators or agents of change since we have been doing the same things for years! However, if we are to keep that small little candle burning, there is some dying to ourselves that we need to do, so that we can light another candle and continue to bring light to the rest of the world.
"[I]f we are to keep that small little candle burning, there is some dying to ourselves that we need to do, so that we can light another candle and continue to bring light to the rest of the world."

When we are able to do this, then we are serving our King! What better way to serve Him than to change for Him and help bring about the change that is much needed today. We can then become the kingdom described in the psalm — strong, holy, and immovable.
