A Reflection on the Gospel for Sunday, May 26th, 2024:
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Matthew
28.16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.

Pause. Pray. Reflect.

This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Church uses this celebration to remind us of who God really is.

The Gospel of Matthew brings Jesus and the disciples together after the Resurrection and before the Ascension. Jesus commissions the disciples to go, to baptize in the name of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), to preach, and to obey all that He has commanded them.

It is beautiful how Matthew reminds us again that some of the disciples doubted. This is important for us all to remember. It’s important to me because my humanity and my sin very often cause me to doubt God, to doubt His call and to doubt His love. Yet, even in the midst of their doubt, the disciples are called by Jesus to baptize and to preach.

This reassures me that it’s not the end of the world when I doubt God. Instead, it’s what I choose to do with that doubt that makes all the difference, and what I must do is acknowledge it, surrender it to God, and continue to do as I (and we all) have been commanded: preach the message of the gospel and live according to its teachings.

I love this Solemnity because it reminds me of how small I am before God, small but not insignificant! I am created by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I am baptized in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and it is through the Father, Son and Holy Spirit that I am empowered to preach the gospel; I simply cannot fulfil my calling without this One God in three persons. Each person of the Trinity is essential and real.

Let us all call on the Most Holy Trinity to empower us to live the gospel, to preach it through the actions of our daily lives, and to do as Jesus commanded us: love!
