We Are His

A Reflection on the Psalm for May 8th, 2022:
Fourth Sunday of Easter

Psalm 100

R. Alleluia!

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.

R. Alleluia!

Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

R. Alleluia!

For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

R. Alleluia!

“One of my greatest fears is that I will end up alone,” I said.

“Great, another fear to add to my list of things to be sacred of,” a 15-year responded.

This was a conversation I had long ago with a confirmation class I was teaching. I can’t quite remember the context of our conversation. After hearing the teen’s response, I do remember immediately saying, “But I never will be alone because God is always with me!”

The funny thing is, I’m not even sure why I named “being alone” as one of my greatest fears. I cannot fear something that I do not believe will happen. I am one of those people who loves time alone. Sometimes I crave it. I am comfortable being alone in a room with no one else but me. I have eaten in restaurants at a table for one. I have travelled solo many times. I need “me time” so that I can be better at “we time”. As someone who believes in a God who does not want me to be alone, I know with certainty that I am never truly alone. God is present with me always. I may not always feel it. But He is.

Because I am His.

As the psalmist says, “It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people…” I have come to truly believe this and as a result, I know I am never alone. Belief is what makes the difference. Belief in the One who created me to be in relationship with Him and with the rest of His creation. For many, the fear of being alone is real. Others are alone. God wants to counter both the fear and the reality of it. And God does so – through me! Through all of us, actually. God surrounds us with people and experiences to remind us that He seeks us, wants to be with us, and is with us through our friends, our family, our acquaintances – sometimes even through those who challenge us or are strangers to us.

Because we are His.

We are called to remind one another that God has a place for each of us. Each of us belongs somewhere, to Someone, because we are loved. When we know this fact, it changes us. It transforms who we are. Knowing God’s love changed me and compels me to witness this Love that was sacrificed for me on the Cross – that was poured out on me through the Holy Spirit, that is lived out in communion with my fellow disciples and beyond. We are His people.  From God’s point of view, that will never change. What changes is our world. God needs us to help the world know and believe that the joy we just experienced on Easter Sunday – the joy of Christ’s resurrection – is the reminder for us to believe in a God who believes in His people.

Amen Aurea! I love this reminder:
“… for us to believe in a God who believes in His people.” 💖

That last line gave me chills, Aurea. Considering the number of times I have fallen short, it seems unfathomable that God would believe in me. But He does because He created me and only He knows my fullest potential. Lord, let me live in abandon to Your will so that I may become who You see.

Oh wow. Thanks Aurea. So good. And because I believe in a God who believes in me and who loves me right as I am - it makes me all the more convicted to continually become more and more like Him and the person He is calling me to be. Lord, help me to know I am Your beloved daughter and be who You are calling me to be. Amen. 😊🙏🏻💕xo
