Your Reflections on the Gospel for December 8th, 2019:
Second Sunday of Advent

Matthew 3.1-12

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the Prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, John said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

It’s your turn! Share with us what God has placed on your heart! The Ora blog will be open from December 6-9 for reflections on this Sunday’s gospel reading (Matthew 3:1-12). The words of John here are really accusing to me personally. How many times have I let myself see a new Christian or a different kind of Christian as not from my particular tribe? The axe is near the tree when I act like that. Just because I blessed to be born into a family of faith, that doesn't mean I'm off the hook. I need to accept the Holy Spirit and bear fruit, all while not being ungracious to those seeking to join our Christian family tree.

Stephanie,
I love how you received the Word with conviction... and your conviction has convicted me! Lord, have mercy.

Our world is so full of distractions and I honestly struggle just to stay on task and to focus. “Squirrel!”, a word I constantly use for myself as I recognize my constant turning away from the task in front of me. This constant turning away happens also in my faith life. Not because I want to turn away or intend to but I am easily distracted.
As I make the conscious choice to sit in the quiet with this reading. I feel peace. I receive direction. I am once again reminded to repent. To turn back my focus towards God, always. This will keep me on the path and only then will I be equipped to bring others along with me.

Oh wow, Karen. Your words resonate deep within me—within the heart of my reality as a mother, and particularly in this season of concerts and gifts and gatherings added onto the already hectic nature of life. The pause and reorientation to God orders all these other things and helps me to look at them in gratefulness for all He has given my family. Thank you for taking the time to share this!
